LUKE 1:28 And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favored* one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!”

MIRIAM

Miriam, the mother of our LORD, is highly favored as she gave birth to our Savior. She is chosen from amongst all other women to bear in her womb the Christ.

Miriam also had the right lineage. (See Luke 3:23-38) So, not just any female Israelite could be the mother of the Messiah! She needed to be descended from King David as the LORD made a promise to him:

2SAM 7:16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.”

When the Millennial Kingdom is here on earth, King David, will be ruling under the King of Kings, Yeshua HaMashiach.

HIGHLY FAVORED

But who else is highly favored?

Cognate: 5487 xaritóō (from 5486 /xárisma, “grace,” see there) – properly, highly-favored because receptive to God’s grace. 5487 (xaritóō) is used twice in the NT (Lk 1:28 and Eph 1:6), both times of God extending Himself to freely bestow grace (favor).

Strong’s Greek 5487: occurs twice in Scripture. ; κεχαριτωμένη — in LK 1:28 and then again ἐχαρίτωσεν in Eph 1:6.

But look to whom it refers!

EPH 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, with which He favored us in the Beloved.

True believers in the Messiah, those born-again of the Spirit, are the ones upon whom God has freely bestowed grace or favored! We are blessed, chosen, predestined as sons of God, and favored! What a marvelous destiny!

However, Miriam (Mary) was probably the first believer in her Son Yeshua. She is therefore blessed, chosen, predestined, and favored, just like the rest of believers! She also needed to be born-again because, according to Yeshua, “unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” She also expressed her need for a Savior:

LK 1:47: “And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.”

And Miriam will be amongst us as we sing the new song:

REV 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying:

“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
10 And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”

SONS of GOD

It says in this passage of Ephesians, that “He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters …” True Christians are the sons of God!

GAL 3:22 “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

We are becoming the sons of God in maturity. It’s a learning cycle. One needs to be sanctified. What one does here on earth, has eternal significance!

ROM 8:18 … to the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the revelation of the sons of God … 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

So, therefore, we should take this Scripture to heart:

for He delivered us and saved us and called us with a holy calling [a calling that leads to a consecrated life—a life set apart—a life of purpose], not because of our works [or because of any personal merit—we could do nothing to earn this], but because of His own purpose and grace [His amazing, undeserved favor] which was granted to us in Christ Jesus before the world began [eternal ages ago],

Yes, we, the chosen sons of God, are in fact highly-favored!

*Some Catholic versions say “full of grace” which is notable in the “Hail, Mary”. (I don’t recommend this prayer as it tends to be a “vain repetition”, saying it over and over and over again in the rosary!)
