“In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me.
As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free,
While God is marching on.”*
A stanza from “Battle Hymn of the Republic”
In Scripture, lilies represent beauty, purity and innocence. We see this in the Song of Solomon (2:1). The Shulammite’s description of herself is metaphorical:
“I am the rose of Sharon, And the lily of the valleys.”
Also, lilies represent divine provision as seen in this verse:
MATT 6:28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?”
RENEWAL & RESTORATION
Lilies symbolize renewal and restoration.
Believers in Christ “have put on the new man” whereby we are “renewed in knowledge,” (COL 3:10) and “renewed in the spirit of your mind.“ (EPH 4:23) This “new man” is a regenerated nature. When we are born again by the Spirit, this new spirit will penetrate the soul throughout one’s life on earth. This is called “sanctification”, causing one to live more like Christ in holiness. Then, finally at the “resurrection of the just”, we will receive our new bodies as well, so they are suited for the heavens! On some wonderful day during the Feast of Trumpets, this will happen:
1COR 15:51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
This is our promise for those who believe in Christ! This is our hope!
FIRSTFRUITS
Yeshua has gone before us, being the Firstfruits. Christ arose from the dead on the feast of Firstfruits fulfilling that feast. (LEV 23:9-14)
“But now Christ is risen from the dead and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.” (1 COR 15:20)
We, true Christians, shall all be resurrected as the Messiah was – for He went first! And, also,
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. (1 John 3:2)

*This first line,“In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,” is further indication that Christ was born in the springtime, possibly on Nisan 1, the first day of the year! For an explanation of this, see the Messianic Rabbi Cahn’s on this site.
