QUICKENED

Written by:

Recently, when speaking with the LORD, I affirmed that it was He who “quickened” to me certain words. These were words coming from various Christian people or words in Scriptures, but it was He who quickened them to me.

Whatever do I mean by that?  This is a mostly archaic word used in the King James Version and other older versions, meaning “to revive” or “to live”, or about life!

Afterwards, I thought about this “quickened” that I used, wondering why I had used it. I knew it from the Book of Hebrews where it is used as an adjective: quick.

HEB 4:12 (KJV)
For the word of God is quick [G2198], and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The English Standard Version translates this as:

(ESV) For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Yes, the word of God is alive! These words or Scriptures that He had given me were “quickened” or living!

One of the words that the LORD gave me was: “You need to play piano”. This word came through a song critic at a Christian music conference. I had been writing Christian music. The critic found out that I wasn’t familiar with chord structure so he told me: “If you’re going to write music, you need to play piano.” It was sure enough a word from God. It was alive! This was a “rhema” word from the LORD. It had that special “je ne sais quoi”. I knew, I just knew it was the LORD speaking to me! I had previously thought that I was too old to learn piano for I was then in my 30’s. Yet, I came home and immediately took lessons. Since then I have led music for Aglow, been a music minister, and still play at church. I indeed wasn’t too old. For If God calls you to it, you’re not too old! Since then I have written over a hundred songs for the LORD. See some of them here. Not all of them have been recorded, but I sing them at church and the LORD will sometimes give me a special song for a special occasion.

“RHEMA”

This words had become “rhema” to me. Another Greek word for “word” is “logos” but these were “rhema” words and more personal, for just me alone.

St. Peter had a word given to him and it was applicable for him:

MATT 26:75 And Peter remembered the saying [G4487] of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Notice “rhema” is used when Mariam/Mary is given at the Annunciation the words of her Savior’s birth.

LUKE 1:38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. [G4487]” And the angel departed from her.

These exact events could never happen again! It was a personal word for a personal person. Yet sometimes it is used generally for more than personal, but here we are talking about the personal communication between God and man, when it becomes “real” for a person. The following is something that could be a “rhema” word from the LORD for you, too!

In my late twenties, when I was in a Buddhist cult, I was very evangelistic but it was not the “good news” I was spreading. I told a salesman in a Palais Royal store in Houston about this Buddhist chant and he said I should say “Jesus Christ is Lord.” Well, I was displeased with my life secretly. I had been saying the Our Father, just wanting to know the truth. So I went home and said this phrase, hoping that something would change in my life. This saying, “Jesus Christ is Lord” was a word from the LORD through a Christian. The LORD wanted me to say it! I had believed when I was young, but I got messed up in my mind. Now I spoke it three times! (See my more complete testimony.) Ten days later, I had a vision of Christ in the spirit. I later learned that this miraculous day was on the Feast of Trumpets!

ROM 10:8 (ESV) But what does it say? “The word [G4487] is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word [G4487] of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess [the saying G4487] with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

From this Scripture the salesman quoted.

“The saying” equals “rhema” in this Greek Text Analysis and in translation:

Literal Emphasis Translation
ROM 10:9 That if you confess the saying [G4487] with your mouth that the Lord is Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised Him up from out of the dead, you will be saved.

I have no idea why translators would leave this word “rhema” out. Maybe this word could be implied in the context through “confess” or “believe in your heart”.

However, one definitely must believe in the heart to be eternally saved. Then that expression of faith becomes personalized. It now becomes a “rhema” word for those who believe. One can say “Jesus is Lord” all day long, and if it hasn’t gone from the head to the heart, it doesn’t have the same effect of crossing one over from spiritual death to eternal life in Christ. So do you believe this “rhema” word that “Jesus Christ is Lord”? It should be a personal confession. Try saying “Jesus Christ is LORD!”, if you believe in your heart!

The Word of God must be “rhema” or come alive in your heart to hold eternal salvation. You must be made alive again, born-again of the Spirit personally!

“QUICKENED” in Hebrew/Greek

OLD TESTAMENT

In the Old Testament, “quickened” is “chayah” (to live). The adjective (living) is “chay”. One may see “chay” on Hebraic necklaces:

חַי

I pray for every Jew wearing this symbol that they will truly know what it is to be “quickened” by the LORD Adonai! Please join me in this prayer!

PSA 143:11 (KJV) Quicken [H2421] me, O LORD, for thy name’s sake: for thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.

PSA 143:11 (NASV) For the sake of Your name, LORD, revive me. In Your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

NEW TESTAMENT

In the NT, it is basically forms of “live” or “life”, coming from these basic root words of “zaó” (to live) and “zóé” (“life”). The Gospel of John uses this “zóé” in referring to “eternal life”!

There are various passages in the NT for the word “quicken” but I’ll just give you a passage from my favorite chapter! (See the chart for more “quickened” words.)

ROM 8:11 (KJV) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (G2227) your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

ROM 8:11 (ESV) If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

This is a Scripture to pray when one is sick! Or sing it over someone who is ill.

OTHER “RHEMA” WORDS

Does God speak to His children? Yes! He speaks in various ways and in “rhema” words!

As I read the Scriptures, some times a word or passage just jumps off the page at me, not literally but spiritually. That is one way I know it’s a “rhema” word.

This is what I was referring to when I told the LORD that He had “quickened” to me these words. Not all these things have come to pass YET, but I stand in faith believing they will happen. It is in the perfect timing of the LORD and many will occur in The Last Days of the Church. Our finest days as a faithful church could be just ahead!

Be encouraged, y’all with “rhema” words! Maybe something in this article has become a “rhema” word to you!

“Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God.
He whose Word cannot be broken
formed thee for His own abode.”

Author – John Newton

God’s “rhema” word to you, if you are sure it is of the LORD, cannot be broken! (Unless there’s an “if”, something one has to fulfill in order for this to happen on it!) Many of these “rhema” words are promises, and God does not break His promise.

LUKE 1:37 For no word [G4487] from God shall be void of power.

Even if the Word of God comes to you personally! Glory be to God!
