The second death. Yeshua the Messiah hinted at this, but He didn’t refer to it as the “second” death. He suggested it here:
JOHN 11:25 (NKJV)
Jesus said to her, “I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die [physically], he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die [spiritually]. Do you believe this?”
Doesn’t this seem to be a contradiction? The LORD was referring both to a physical and spiritual death.
SECOND DEATH
This passage is from the Book of Revelation where the saints already have been resurrected and they will live and reign with Christ forever. St. John employs the “second death” in this passage.
REV 20:6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
The first death is physical, with the body. “Death” means “separation” in the Scriptures. The immortal soul will separate from the dying body, due to trauma or old age.
When an unbeliever’s body dies physically, it’s soul goes to Hades. (Westerners call this “hell” but technically in the Greek it is a different word. After the Great White Throne Judgment, those unbelieving souls will go to hell.) Unbelievers through sin have a “dead” spirit so they cannot be with the HOLY LORD who is LIFE. Death and LIFE are opposites!
ROM 5:12
Therefore, just as through one man [Adam] sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—
The second death is eternal separation from God Almighty, who is LOVE and LIFE! Who really desires this separation from a God who loves us so that He sent His Son that whoever believes in Him can have eternal life? (JOHN 3:16) God is not willing that anyone perish! But the choice is yours! God provided us the LAMB who paid for our salvation on the cross and then He was gloriously resurrected!

BORN AGAIN
That’s why we need to be “born again” through faith in Christ.
JOHN 3:3 (BSB) Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”
When a believer’s body dies physically, it’s soul & spirit are with the LORD. The spirit is already in heaven (another dimension). The soul is one with the spirit there.
JOHN 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life …
Pulpit Commentary “Faith [in Christ] is eternal life: death is only a momentary shadow upon a life which is far better. Whether the corruption of the grave passes over the believer or not, he lives an eternal life, which has no element of death nor proclivity to death in it.
FIRST RESURRECTION
REV 20:6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
Wow! “The second death has no power!” Christians are alive forever, alive in the Spirit! (True Christians, those born again of His Spirit, are not just playing “church” or joining in ritualized religion!)
Yeshua proclaimed He is the RESURRECTION! But He was the firstfruits! There is another resurrection when Christ returns! (This is sometimes referred to in popular language as the “rapture”.)
1COR 15:23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming.
Do you want to be part of this blessed first resurrection? Come to faith in Jesus Christ! Believe on the LORD who is the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE!
In relation to the Scripture above, where Yeshua proclaimed He is the RESURRECTION and the LIFE, the LORD asked, “Do you believe this?” So …
Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary Do we believe this truth? The crosses and comforts of this present time would not make such a deep impression upon us as they do, if we believed the things of eternity as we ought. When Christ our Master comes, he calls for us. He comes in his word and ordinances, and calls us to them, calls us by them, calls us to himself.
So, will you be part of the First Resurrection?
Or do you want to be the last part of that verse?
JOHN 3:36b … and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
