God is Spirit

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24

We must worship God in spirit and truth. Are we not worshiping God if we are not in the spirit? Are we not worshiping God if we are not in truth? The Truth is Jesus/Yeshua and His Word is Truth! We must worship God according to how He has prescribed to be worshiped!

This following prayer to the One True God by King Solomon during the Feast of Trumpets (Yom Teruah) shows that God is Spirit.

But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! 1 Kings 8:27

Heavens cannot contain the LORD. And certainly, the temple of Solomon couldn’t contain YHVH. He is infinite. He is omniscient. God’s Spirit is everywhere.

BORN-AGAIN BELIEVERS

However, God’s temple, where He particularly dwells in the Spirit on earth, is now in the heart of born-again believers. We, too, are spirit with a soul and a body.

16 Do you not know that you [born-again Christians] are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17 If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. 1Corinthians 3:16–17

Yeshua explained that the Spirit is comparable to the wind.

5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” John 3

The Kingdom of God is a very spiritual place and you must be born-again of the Spirit to enter therein.

NOTE: In context, Nicodemus’ was asking a question and refers to the womb. This is not referring to water baptism but to physical birth! A baby is in the amniotic sac and shortly before birth, that sac ruptures and “the water breaks”. Jesus goes on to say that “Flesh is born of flesh”. Why would He say this if He were referring to water baptism?

Therefore, through St. Paul, come these Words from the LORD:

14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion [G2842 koinónia] has light with darkness? 15And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:

“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”
**

17 Therefore

“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
18 “I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”
***

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

** a composite based on Exodus 29:45 and Leviticus 26:12;
*** another composite based on Isaiah 52:11, Numbers 16:21 and Ezra 6:21

This “Come out” is repeated by St. John in the Book of Revelation:

And I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. Rev 18:4

Notice this says “my people”! We should read the rebukes in Revelation 2 & 3, and then repent of sins for which we are guilty.

SPIRIT TO SPIRIT

God relates to us in the Spirit. He usually speaks to us in the Spirit.

When Jesus predicted His death for us on the cross, the Father spoke from heaven saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” (John 12:28)

However, many people thought that it had thundered.

29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” John 12:29

But it was the heavenly Father. These people were not listening in the Spirit.

Visions and prophesying are also done in the Spirit.

4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1Corinthians 12

The LORD walks with us in the Spirit.

Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. Psalm 139:7-10

So therefore we should be walking in the Spirit also!

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

True “agape” love is manifest through the Spirit.

Fear is washed aside by the Spirit of God dwelling in us.

We just need to be more in the Spirit!

And that comes by communing with God.

17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God. Ephesians 5:17-21

Conclusion

God is Spirit. Born-again believers are spirits. We communicate with God through words or thoughts in the spirit. The holy words in the Scriptures are also spirit.

Yeshua taught,

“The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

John 6:63

Ephesians 5:8
