REV 17:1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

Does this “great harlot” have influence even over the kings?  Has she dominated monarchs over many lands? If we look at the historic record, this religious Babylon holds sway over the heads of states! It seems that no one else fits this Scripture to a tee, except for papal Rome!

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible: “With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication – Spiritual adultery. The meaning is, that papal Rome, unfaithful to God, and idolatrous and corrupt, had seduced the rulers of the earth, and led them into the same kind of unfaithfulness, idolatry, and corruption…. How true this is in history need not be stated. All the princes and kings of Europe in the dark ages, and for many centuries were, and not a few of them are now, entirely under the influence of papal Rome.”

The Roman Catholic Church had religiously subjugated many countries, particularly much of Europe, but not always under that name, from the time of Constantine.

“History” is written by those in charge and the RCC was in charge. It may seem like this is a pious religion but how could these popes do some of the most horrendous actions throughout the ages!

ANTI-SEMITISM

Constantine wanted to separate the Jews, even Messianic Jews, who were to him “an abominable sect”, from the Christians. That was a tragedy. The whole Christian church was hurt by this as the Gentiles didn’t have the cultural or spiritual understanding of the believing Jews.

Example of anti-semitism from The Popes in Line:

Popes were responsible for much of the antisemitism shown the Jews over centuries. This is a spirit of antichrist!

Pope Leo III (795-816). Pope Leo had the Jewish people “baptized” by force!

Innocent III (1198-1216) “Canon 68 states: Jews and Muslims shall wear a special dress to enable them to be distinguished from Christians.” 

Pope Paul IV (1555-1559) in his document, required Jews to live in a Roman ghetto and the males to wear pointed yellow hats. Jewish women needed to wear yellow kerchiefs.

These dastardly things find their culmination in the Nazi regime: yellow stars and ghettoes.

ABSOLUTE POWER

“Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Pontifex Maximus, or “greatest priest” or “supreme pontiff” was initially used for the chief priest of the Roman state religion and later Roman Emperors but then it was adopted by the popes.

“By this title [of Pontifex Maximus] it is that the Pope prevailed with the subjects of all Christian princes to believe that to disobey him was to disobey Christ himself;” (Thomas Hobbes, a 17th century English philosopher in Leviathan.)

These are some examples showing that the popes were in control of the kings of the earth! They exercised authority over kings and emperors!

Innocent III (1198-1216) During his time of office, he was possibly the most powerful man in Europe.  “He had not lost a single battle. In pursuit of his aims, he shed more blood than any other pontiff” [Peter de Rosa, Vicars of Christ: The Dark Side of the Papacy (Crown Publishers, 1988) p 73]

Gregory IX (1227-41) The papal decree issued by him “emphasize[d] his power over the Universal Church”.   He established the Papal Inquisition to persecute anyone who did not agree with the doctrines of the Roman Catholic church. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decretales_Gregorii_IX

Pope Boniface VIII (1294 –1303) The Bull Unam Sanctam in 1302 “declared that both spiritual and temporal power were under the pope’s jurisdiction, and that kings were subordinate to the power of the Roman pontiff.”     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Boniface_VIII

Pope Pius XII (1939-58). There are two sides of the story of Pius XII in his role during World War II. What role did he play? Did he manipulate things? Was he for or against the Jews? Even while Pius was a cardinal, “there was some level of political maneuvering behind the scenes during the early years of Nazi rule.” (Chatgpt)

Author David I. Kertzer, a Pulitzer Prize winner, believes the pope did not do enough in his position of power and has written several factual books about this: The Pope and Mussolini; The Pope at War; The Pope Against the Jews. This article in Newsweek highlights The Pope at War.

Pope Francis (2013-2025) is arranging for a one-world religion!

Many consider Pope Francis a heretic, even Catholic scholars! “All religions are paths to reach God,” said Pope Francis. “They are—to make a comparison—like different languages, different dialects, to get there. The popes have been considered authorities, their word sacrosanct and spiritual leaders to all, even for those not of the same religion.

FORNICATION

“THE KINGS OF THE EARTH COMMITTED FORNICATION”

This passage from REV 17:2 is basically repeated in the next chapter.

REV 18:3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her …”

How have they committed fornication? How many kings have had mistresses on the side? How many are involved with sodomy? How many kings were downright “queer”?

But they have committed spiritual fornication with her in practicing what the RCC has taught!

MADE DRUNK

REV 17:2 and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

But now this perversion is in the mainstream culture! So sad!

“Illicit sex carries with it terrible spiritual defilement…. These ideals of sex without boundaries are propagated by demonic forces in our day just as they were promoted by rampant worship of idols in history…. Our culture has fallen head over heels into idolatry. Every act of sex outside of marriage is bowing to a demonic force called Baal. Every person committing adultery is bowing to Baal. Every married couple involved in sex parties with other married couples (swingers) are bowing at the altar of Baal. Every homosexual and lesbian act is literally bowing to Baal. Every crossdresser is bowing to Baal. Every gender binary and trans-gender person is bowing to Baal. Every person viewing pornography is bowing their knee to Baal. Maybe these actions don’t seem as if it is worship to Baal. The demonic force does not want you to know! What Christian would worship Baal? Yet Baal is a god of fertility and the worship of Baal included prostitutes and all kinds of perverted sex. (We will look more at Baal worship in the next post.)

1COR 6:15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot? Certainly not! 16 Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one body with her? For “the two,” He says, “shall become one flesh.” 17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Letters were sent to the churches that were involved with sexual immorality:

“Profane Pergamum”, if she did not repent from her sexual immorality and other things, was told that the LORD would “fight against them with the sword of [His] mouth.” (REV 2)

“Too-Tolerant Thyatira”, if she did not repent from her sexual immorality and other things, was told that they would go “into great tribulation” and her children would deal with death! (REV 2)

So again, I repeat:

“Flee sexual immorality.”

Be an overcomer! And be faithful to the LORD!
