Psalm 110 begins:
The LORD said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
This is portraying YHWH speaking to Yeshua HaMashiach. What does YHWH call His Son?
PSA 110:4 The LORD has sworn
and will not change His mind:
“You are a priest forever
in the order of Melchizedek”.
This is repeated in the New Testament:
HEB 7:17 For He testifies: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
WHO IS MELCHIZEDEK?
The Hebrew word “Melchizedek” is translated “King of Righteousness”.
- “Melek” (מֶלֶך) = “king” in Hebrew.
- “Tzedek” (צֶדֶק) = “righteousness” or “justice” in Hebrew.
Who is our King of Righteousness?
“YAHWEH TSIDKENU” is a covenant name of the LORD meaning “the LORD our Righteousness”.
JER 23:6b … Now this is His name by which He will be called:
EPH 4:24 and that you [through Yeshua] put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
(If you haven’t read “My Perfect Dove”, please do so especially under “YAHWEH TSIDKENU” and it will give you more details about this name.)
KING OF PEACE
Melchizedek is the King of Salem (Jerusalem/Yerushalayim/Zion). The Hebrew name “Salem” or “Shalom” means “peace”. Therefore, Melchizedek is the King of Peace.
PSA 76:2 In Salem also is His [Elohim’s] tabernacle, And His dwelling place in Zion.
Who is our “Prince of Peace”? (Isaiah 9:6).
THE PRIEST
Melchizedek blesses Abram (Abraham) in Genesis 14:18-20. He unites both kingship and priesthood in his life. Abram gifted this High Priest with tithes.
Who is our High Priest?
HEB 7:26 NASB For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest [Yeshua], holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens;
THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS
The Essenes, a Jewish sect, operating around the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century AD, saved important scrolls in many caves to keep them safe for posterity. Some of the Dead Sea Scrolls aren’t in our standard Bible, but we can learn what they say about Melchizedek. The scrolls offer us some fascinating ideas!
The 11QMelchizedek (or 11Q13), a most interesting and mysterious of the scrolls, was found at Qumran. This scroll reveals an apocalyptic text interpreting passages based on Leviticus, Isaiah, Psalms, and Daniel highlighting Melchizedek as a heavenly figure. Might they see Melchizedek as a pre-existent Messiah?
“…and this is the time of the vengeance of our God, to comfort those who mourn. And it is He (Melchizedek) who will deliver His people, and it is He who will be the one who brings vengeance to the wicked…” (11Q13, Fragment 1)
This agrees with the Prophet Isaiah:
ISA 63:4 For the day of vengeance is in My heart,
And the year of My redeemed has come.
This next passage says “according to the words of Scripture“. Maybe modern folk are missing something in the translation of the Hebrew. Or maybe not. It could be the names or titles. (See Hebrews 7 below.)
So maybe Melchizedek, the King of Righteousness, is one and the same as Yeshua HaMashiach, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS?
“…and Melchizedek, according to the words of Scripture, is the one who will bring about the vengeance of God. He will deliver the righteous, and he will execute judgment on the wicked, and he will be like Michael the angel of vengeance…” (11Q13, Fragment 1)
Perhaps they, the scroll keepers, did believe that Melchizedek is the Son of Man from the prophet Daniel’s vision.
“…and Melchizedek will rule over them in the name of God, and He will be the one who will bring the vengeance of God upon them…” (11Q13, Fragment 2)
DAN 7:13 “I was watching in the night visions,
And behold, One like the Son of Man,….
26 ‘But the court shall be seated,
And they shall take away his [satan’s] dominion,
To consume and destroy it forever.
27 Then the kingdom and dominion,
And the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven,
Shall be given to the people, the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And all dominions shall serve and obey Him.’
Matt 13:41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
Vengeance and deliverance! These passages speak of them.
“…and he [Melchizedek] will proclaim the year of Jubilee to the people of God, and he will atone for their sins, and all will be restored.” (11Q13, Fragment 2)
Wow! That’s profound!
Who proclaimed the Jubilee? Yeshua HaMashiach!
“The year of the Lord’s favor” is a reference to the Jubilee mentioned in Luke’s Gospel. Then Yeshua said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:16–21)
Who atoned for our sins? Only Yeshua HaMashiach!
1JOHN 2:2 CSB He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.
Who will see that all is restored before the fall of man? Yeshua HaMashiach!
ACTS 3:21 whom heaven must receive until the times of restoration of all things, which God has spokes by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began.
HEBREWS 7
HEB 7:1 NASB For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham as he was returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth of all the spoils, was first of all, by the translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace.
3 NASB Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.
How is it that Melchizedek was without a record of genealogy? Where did he come from? The Jewish people were meticulous in keeping records of births! We know the records of the earthly Yeshua of Nazareth, from both the mother’s side and father’s side, but this refers to the Melchizedek long ago in Genesis at that time who had no genealogy.
Some Biblical scholars believe that Melchizedek was a historical individual. They claim that Melchizedek is not a Theophany, a visible manifestation of Christ. They use as proof the verb “made like” (verse 3). This is not a very strong argument. It could have been “made like” as He would have come from heaven to earth. The transition between the two places could be called “made like” — going from a spiritual body to having an earthly body. (See for this 1 Corinthians 15:50 onward.)
But what about the lack of a genealogy?
What about “having neither beginning of days nor end of life”?
Other scholars believe, including Tremper Longman III, a Yale graduate, an Old Testament scholar, theologian, former professor and author, that Melchizedek is an Old Testament Christophany – in other words, that Melchizedek is the Messiah.
Consider these statements:
7:4 NASB Now observe how great this man was to whom Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth of the choicest spoils. [!!!!!]
Melchizedek is a great man! Could He be the pre-incarnate appearance of Christ?
7:7 Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better.
Melchizedek did the blessing. Yet Abram (Abraham) is a patriarch, renowned by the Hebrews and NT believers! Who would be better than Abraham? Yet it was Melchizedek who blessed because He is the better!
In verse 3, it also states that Melchizedek “remains a priest perpetually“. But would he be a High Priest? Would Melchizedek be demoted? Because now in heaven, our High Priest is Yeshua!
HEB 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.
Melchizedek just seems to be a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ!
HEB 7:24 But He [Yeshua], because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
CONCLUSION
The names and titles concur for both Melchizedek and the Messiah (see HEB 7:2 above) and these are only from Scripture!
- King of Righteousness/THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS
- King of Salem (Peace)/Prince of Peace
- High Priest/High Priest
Frequently there are real figures in the Scriptures that are allusions to the Christ. For example, Joseph, son of Jacob, was a prophetic type of Christ. Therefore, Melchizedek could have been just a human being in Genesis. However, Melchizedek could have been the pre-existent Messiah in person! We just don’t know for sure. Please don’t break fellowship with others over this point!
These Scriptures and the Dead Sea Scrolls are prophetic and point to the Messiah’s return and His end-time judgment, His reign in the Millennial Kingdom and also the everlasting nature of Melchizedek’s priesthood.
Yeshua is coming again!
“His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom!”
