Ba’al Worship: Then & Now

Written by:

An ugly pagan god: Molech/Ba’al. Notice the sun and evil eye on its chest. This is a statue (not original) that was temporarily set up at the Colosseum in Rome with approval from the Vatican!

Ba’al worship could include ritual prostitution, other kinds of deviant sexual behavior, self-inflicted bodily abuse, and child sacrifice. Ba’al could also be known as Molech. They both required the same ungodly actions.

Baal is portrayed as a bull. (Google “baal statue in NY” or “baal arch”)

HIGH HILLS

JER 2:20b When on every high hill and under every green tree you lay down, playing the harlot.

Baal was worshipped on high hills.

JER 19:5 (they have also built the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings to Baal, which I did not command or speak, nor did it come into My mind),

CRUEL CHILD SACRIFICES

Psalm 106: 37 They even sacrificed their sons
And their daughters to demons,

38 And shed innocent blood,
The blood of their sons and daughters,
Whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan;
And the land was polluted with blood.
39Thus they were defiled by their own works,
And played the harlot by their own deeds.

The famous Rabbi Rashi commented on JER 7:31 that Molech (Baal) “was made of brass; and they heated him from his lower parts; and his hands being stretched out, and made hot, they put the child between his hands, and it was burnt; when it vehemently cried out; but the priests beat a drum, that the father might not hear the voice of his son, and his heart might not be moved.”

How cruel! The parents of the child were forbidden to cry at this horrible torture!

Today, worldwide, tiny babies are tortured and killed in the womb for the god of convenience.

I believe the story of Abraham & Isaac on Mt. Moriah, other than being a prophetic illustration of the Father & His Son, was partially to show that the LORD God Almighty didn’t want parents to offer their children in a brutal sacrifice. The pagan gods demanded child sacrifice, yet YHWH thought it an abomination! (PRO 6:16-17)

GEN 22:12 And He [YHWH] said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

Our True God offered His Son, Yeshua, as the sacrifice for all of our sins!

HEB 10:14 For by one offering He [Yeshua] has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

IMMORALITY

This 1 Corinthians 10 passage is speaking about idolatry and sexual immorality. These sexual sins are practiced in Baal worship. Why would St. Paul bring this up if not for immorality amongst some of the Corinthian believers?

7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”

Pulpit Commentary Verse 7. – As were some of them. As in the case of the golden calf, the worship of Moloch, Remphan, Baal-peor, etc. In the prominent instance of the calf worship, they (like the Corinthians) would have put forth sophistical pleas in their own favour … To play. The word is, perhaps, used euphemistically for the worst concomitants of a sensual nature worship (Exodus 32:3-6) which resembled the depraved and orgiastic worship …

8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell;

This incident of worship to Baal Peor (Numbers 25:1–18) is referred to in this very same chapter!

NUM 25:1 Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab. 2 They invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.  3 So Israel was joined to Baal of Peor, and the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel.

Notice the word “harlotry”. This series is about who the “great harlot” is from Revelation 17.

Also, notice that this still goes on today, maybe not with temple prostitutes, but immorality is an all-too common occurrence!

THE TABLE OF DEMONS

Reading on, 1 Corinthians 10 talks about “fellowship with demons”. Why would St. Paul refer to this, if not to warn the church that this was not kosher?

20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons.

Why would St. Paul mention this? Some were doing this very thing!

21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons.

Study Bible (1COR 10:21): The “cup of demons” alludes to pagan sacrifices and rituals, which were common in Corinth, a city known for its diverse religious practices and temples. Paul warns against syncretism, the blending of Christian and pagan practices, which was a temptation for early Christians living in a polytheistic society. This duality is incompatible with the Christian faith…

The RCC is a syncretic organization! Pagan practices have invaded this church and the hierarchy allows it, and encourages it!

Referring back to the Numbers 25 incident in Psalms:

PSA 106:28 They joined themselves also to Baal of Peor,
And ate sacrifices made to the dead.
[lifeless gods]

Study Bible (PSALM 106:28): “The term “yoked” implies a binding or joining, suggesting a deep level of commitment or entanglement.”

No matter what false deity was in Corinth at that time, be it Aphrodite or Apollo or Baal, if the Christians joined or “yoked” themselves at the table, they would have been doing this with demons!

Study Bible (PSALM 106:28): “The act of eating sacrifices offered to idols was not merely a physical act but a spiritual one, signifying participation in pagan worship.”

MYSTIC UNION

Pulpit Commentary:Verse 28. – “They joined themselves also unto Baal-peor (see Numbers 25:3). The exact expression used in the Pentateuch is repeated. It signifies a mystic union, such as was supposed to exist between a heathen god and his worshippers, and to be kept up by sacrificial meals and the like …”

Today, this “mystic union” with demons is accomplished through the Roman Mass and “kept up by sacrificial meals”, the taking of the host. Congregants eat the wafer which they believe is the Real Presence of Christ, but in reality this is similar to the symbol for Baal:

Does this look like the matzoh (below) that the LORD took at the Last Supper? The monstrance that usually housed the host is shaped like a sun. Pagan Babylon & Rome worshipped the sun. There are many other pagan symbols in Roman Catholic churches and the Vatican. Research it.

BREAKING BREAD

Generally, in the RCC, only the priests can handle the wafer, the host. Yet Christians are encouraged to “break bread”. How can this be done in the RCC?

LUKE 22:19 And He [Yeshua] took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.

1COR 10:16 (Literal Standard Version) The cup of the blessing that we bless—is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? The bread that we break—is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?

The Greek word “KOINÓNIA” means “fellowship”. We have fellowship or unity with Christ and His body of believers.

“Breaking bread” to the Messianic Jews has also another meaning: to share the Word of God!

This Christian symbolic ceremony is in memory of the Last Supper, a Passover celebration. Everything in this ceremony is symbolic! However, it represents our Passover Lamb, Yeshua!

1COR 5:7b For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.

TRANSUBSTANTIATION

Everything in the Passover celebration was symbolic and it had a spiritual meaning. When Christ said “This is my body”, He also was speaking figuratively. Therefore, Christ is NOT literal “bread”, but He is the spiritual food for life eternal.

Transubstantiation, the idea that the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ, while appearing as bread and wine, became official doctrine at the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215AD.  The concept was around for some centuries but it was NEVER THE APOSTLES’ DOCTRINE!

If the bread drops on the floor accidentally, it is just bread. This is a totally pagan and Roman doctrine! In the RCC, one must genuflect before this host. That is, the Catholics are bowing down to a piece of bread in a holder, a monstrance, that looks like a sun. This is Baal worship! This is idolatry! We should not bow down to a creation but to the Creator!

1 COR 10:22a Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy?

In Revelation, the LORD rebukes the church at Pergamos who are eating “things sacrificed to idols”. Is this what they are doing in the Roman Catholic Church today? Now, I don’t say that every Catholic knows this, because there are true Christians, those who have been born again of the Spirit, amongst them.

But the LORD warns these Christians:

“Come out of her [Babylon], My people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. (REV 18:4)

I pray:

1COR 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Those who overcome, this is the promise the LORD makes:

REV 2:17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’

This was the letter to Pergamos. It is interesting that the overcomers in this church are promised “hidden manna”! This is opposed to the “host” of Baal. The “mystic union” with Christ Himself will be the overcomers’ reward!
