The Feast of Trumpets, or Yom Teruah (also commonly called Rosh Hashanah) is when I had a vision of the LORD, 39 years ago. I didn’t realize it then that it was this feast until much later. God still does amazing things in my life during these fall feasts.
HONEY & APPLES
Honey and apples are typical food for the Feast of Trumpets. They symbolize “May we have a sweet new year” for this is the civil New Year for the Jewish people.
However, Nisan (sometimes Abib), usually in March or April on our calendar, is the first month of the year! In the book of Exodus, YHWH spoke to Moses and his brother Aaron:
“This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you.” Exodus 12:2
Nisan means “First fruits”!
SOUNDING THE SHOFAR
“Rosh Hashanah”, the new year, began to be celebrated when the Jews were living in Babylon! The Scriptures do not mention a new year on the first of Tishrei, but scripturally this day is the “Day of Sounding the Shofar”. (Leviticus 23:24-25)
However, “the Mesopotamian New Year began either in the beginning of autumn, on the first day of the seventh month, called Tashritu (the origin of the Hebrew month-name Tishrei, not yet found in the Bible), literally meaning “Beginning,”….” (From TheTorah.com)
The Babylonian deities had a “Day of Judgment” at this time of year so Rosh Hashanah – not the scriptural feast of Yom Teruah, has a smattering of Babylonian roots. We tend to take on things in the culture around us, which in some cases is unfortunate! But really, for the “Babylonians”, present and past, who were persecuting the elect of God, it is a “Day of Judgment”:
This is Yahweh’s judgment against Babylon, which speaks prophetically today:
“Behold, I am against you, O destroying mountain, says the LORD, who destroy all the earth: and I will stretch out my hand upon you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain.” Jeremiah 51:25
I believe, the Feast of Trumpets is the beginning of the “wrath of God”. Saints, we are not appointed to God’s wrath, but we still do see trials and tribulations! (See “The Coming of the LORD”)
1 Thessalonians 5:9-10
9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
The saints will be “together with Him” when they are whisked away in the “resurrection of the just”.
Yeshua said:
LUKE 14:14b
“… for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
This Sounding of the Shofar is when we true Christians will all be resurrected, what most of us refer to as the “rapture”. Yet Yeshua called it the resurrection. We will be changed!
1COR 15:52
“in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
Did you know the “resurrection” is mentioned in the Old Testament?
Isaiah 26 NKJV
19 Your dead shall live; Together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; For your dew is like the dew of herbs, And the earth shall cast out the dead.
This is the resurrection of the Old Testament saints, but it goes on to the future resurrection of the just:
20 Come, my people, enter your chambers, [inner rooms/bedrooms]
And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past. [The NIV, CSB say “wrath”]
21 For behold, the Lord comes out of His place
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity;
The earth will also disclose her blood,
And will no more cover her slain.
Saints, we are “hidden with Christ” COL 3:3 but we will then be in the inner chambers and the door will be shut. This has to do with the wedding feast of the LAMB, Yeshua (REV 19:7).
Notice the parallel to Matthew 25:
10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
The Lamb & the Bride will be in their chuppah (canopy) for seven days, the normal time for a Jewish couple to be on their honeymoon! This lines up with the days between the two-day Feast of Trumpets and Yom Kippur. Meanwhile, the final plagues of Revelation are taking place on earth, but the Bride and her guests will be in heaven! Then comes the LORD on His white horse and Armageddon (REV 19:11) , the concluding battle on Yom Kippur. So these fall feasts look prophetically to the Second Coming of the LORD and it all begins with Yom Teruah, the Feast of Trumpets!
PSALM 47 (ISR)
5 Elohim shall go up with a shout, יהוה with the sound of a ram’s horn. 6 Sing praises to Elohim, sing praises! Sing praises to our Sovereign, sing praises! 7 For Elohim is Sovereign of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. 8 Elohim shall reign over the nations; Elohim shall sit on His set-apart throne.
DEEPER MEANING
I will leave you with this: The honey and the apple has a deeper meaning. If you want, you may meditate on the Song of Solomon, in particular these following verses.
An apple orchard is fragrant. The Shulamite, representing the Bride of Christ, compares her Beloved, the King of Kings, to a fragrant apple tree.
BRIDE to her KING:
Song of Solomon 2:3-5
Like an apple tree among the trees of the woods, So is my beloved among the sons. I sat down in his shade with great delight, And his fruit was sweet to my taste. 4 He brought me to the banqueting house, And his banner over me was love. 5 Sustain me with cakes of raisins, Refresh me with apples, For I am lovesick.
The KING speaks to His BRIDE:
SOS 4:11
Your lips, O my spouse, Drip as the honeycomb; Honey and milk are under your tongue; And the fragrance of your garments Is like the fragrance of Lebanon.
Honey and apples are appropriate for this feast for someday on this feast day*, the Bride will be “lifted up” to heaven. Then there will be the most extravagant and royal wedding ever!
REV 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
How can you be ready for when the LORD returns?

NOTES:
*MATT 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.”
Yeshua spoke this because the new moon had to be seen to start this feast. But we will know the season!
1THESS 5:4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. 5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.
